How to make Halloween lantern jars

A great way to keep kids entertained and recycle those old jam, chutney and pickle jars!

You will need:

  • tissue paper or serviettes
  • black paper
  • Mod Podge glue
  • glass jars
  • brushes
  • ribbon for trim

Step 1:

Design the face you'd like on your lantern using black paper.

Tip: when drawing the design, draw it on the opposite side you want to display.

Step 2:

Cut out your face or faces ready to put on your lantern.

Here's a few ideas!

Step 3:

Cut strips of paper ready to glue on your jar.  When glueing, lie the strips one at a time from the top - just under the rim and around to cover the bottom of the jar.

If working outside, put something on top of them to make sure they don’t blow away.

Step 4:

Instead of cutting strips, you can also just roll your jar in your paper.

Step 5:

When ready, paint the Mod Podge glue over the paper until the entire jar is covered.

Step 6:

Once you have the paper on your jar, lay your face on the jar and paint over it to keep it in place.

Turn the jar upside down to dry.

Step 7:

When dry, add some ribbon around the rim of the jar, and add your candle!  Battery operated tea lights are fantastic for kids and many flicker too.
